Holst - The Planets (Previn, London Symphony Orchestra, 1974)

This is a good, sturdy reading of Die Planeten. I can’t find much to fault about it (not that I looked too hard anyway – I simply listened to the music and enjoyed it). The interpretation doesn’t plumb any hitherto unknown depths in the music, but I can live with that.

I enjoyed PP (i.e., Previn’s Planets). The conducting’s good, the playing’s good, the engineering’s good, and the production’s good. It’s good, good, good. Good.

My favourite thing about this recording is the sound of the London double decker buses in the quiet bits going past outside the hall. At least I think it’s this one…
